Ontem (3), em resoluo de um acordo que comeou a ser negociado ainda no ano passado, os britnicos cederam a soberania do Arquiplago de Chagos(grupo formado por mais de 60 ilhas localizadas no Oceano ndico) Repblica de Maurcio, territrio que se tornou independente do Reino Unido em 1968.A Repblica de Maurcio formada por um conjunto de ilhas a leste de Madagascar, e fora administrativamente separadapelos britnicos do seu arquiplago no Oceano ndico ento chamado Territrio Britnico do Oceano ndico em 1965 (antes mesmo de ter sua independncia reconhecida).
Essa separao foi feita para que a administrao britnica da regio pudesse erguer, na ilha principal do arquiplago ilha de Diego Garcia , uma base militar em conjunto com os Estados Unidos, num movimento de "ocupao ilegal", de acordo com habitantes das ilhas de Chagos.
O Reino Unido chegou a deportar cerca de duas mil pessoas que habitavam Chagos para as Ilhas Maurcio, a fim de tomar o controle da regio e ocup-la com militares do servio britnico.
Agora, depois de quase dois anos de negociaes para a retomada dos direitos de soberania do arquiplago, a Repblica de Maurcio e os britnicos finalmente finalizaram o acordo de devoluo elogiado pelo presidente dos EUA, Joe Biden, em comunicado que ainda comemora um outro termo do acordo: a manuteno de uma base militar estrangeira na regio.
A base de Diego Garcia, construda pelos EUA em parceria com a Gr-Bretanha na dcada de 1970, vai continuar a ser territorialmente administrada pelo Reino Unido "por um perodo inicial de 99 anos", diz a clusula do acordo.
O local considerado estratgico e "fundamental para a segurana regional e global", de acordo com o Ministrio das Relaes Exteriores do Reino Unido, e est atualmente "arrendado" para operaes dos EUA o acordo de arrendamento foi travado em 2016 e deve durar at 2036.
A retomada da soberania administrativa das Ilhas de Chagos, no obstante, foi considerada um avano pelo ministro das Relaes Exteriores das Ilhas Maurcio, Maneesh Gobin, que disse ser um dia inesquecvel para comemorar a plena soberania da Repblica de Maurcio sobre todo o seu territrio" nesta quinta (3).
