The Prime Minister has announced what the describes as the biggest transfer of powers from in a generation, giving English mayors greater control over , housing, planning, skills, employment support and public services in every postcode. The plans include greater local control of rail and bus services to support integrated ticketing and improve reliability, along with more control over major local transport schemes, including trams and metros, by reducing Whitehall oversight. Mayors will also retain a share of income tax revenues for the first time, alongside a larger share of business rates, allowing areas to keep more of the benefits of economic growth. Major MoD data breach would not have happened if staff had been trained on Excel

The leak happened when an member of MoD personnel sent an Excel file outside of government. They thought the data sheet had the details of around 150 Afghan applicants in it, when it in fact had a hidden tab with details of over 18,500 others. The breach "could still have been prevented" if MoD personnel had "received basic training" on this, the report concluded

MP Diane Abbott readmitted into Labour Party after suspension

"Catastrophic MoD data breach would not have happened if staff had been trained on Excel

Blunder which exposed personal details of tens of thousands of Afghans was forseeable failure covered up by secrecy for too long, MPs said

A catastrophic Ministry of Defence data breach that exposed the personal details of tens of thousands of Afghans was a foreseeable failure covered up by secrecy for too long, a damning investigation has concluded.

In a report from the influential defence select committee, MPs criticised the government for almost every aspect of their handling of the data breach, the resulting superinjunction a court order so strict that even mentioning its existence was forbidden and the covert evacuation of thousands of Afghan families.

They concluded that secrecy was maintained for too long, accountability was too weak, delivery was too fragmented, and affected Afghans were too often left without the information and support they needed.

The leak, in February 2022, exposed the details of 18,700 Afghans who said they were in danger from the Taliban because of their links to UK forces and now wanted to escape to Britain."

"The co-founder of Palestine Action has won permission to challenge the ban against the group at the UKs highest court.

The direct action group was proscribed as a terrorist organisation in July last year but its co-founder, Huda Ammori, has been fighting to have the ban overturned amid a mass civil disobedience campaign.

In February, the high court ruled that the ban was disproportionate and unlawful but its decision was overturned by the court of appeal last month.

On Thursday, the supreme court said Ammori could appeal against the court of appeals decision and that the case would be heard in the final quarter of this year.

It means the fate of more than 3,500 people who have been arrested for alleged support of Palestine Action since the ban remains in limbo as their cases are on hold until the legality of proscription has been definitely resolved.

Ammori welcomed the supreme courts decision, saying: The proscription of Palestine Action has become a vehicle for a far broader crackdown on expressions of solidarity with the Palestinian people.

This unprecedented attack on free speech and the right to protest in this country is already having a chilling effect at a time when speaking out about Israels crimes could not be more urgent."

The protest is the first in support of the proscribed group since Andy Burnham became prime minister.

British police have arrested 77 people as crowds gathered outside a London court to declare support for Palestine Action, which is proscribed as a terrorist organisation in the United Kingdom.

The rally outside Westminster Magistrates Court on Thursday was organised by the Defend Our Juries activist group to picket the start of hearings against the first of thousands of people charged with voicing support for Palestine Action."
